Mountain Wildlife Days July 17-18

It’s All About Education

Most folks in our area are aware of the annual Mountain Wildlife Days weekend and how it provides an up close and personal wildlife educational experience for those who attend. But many may not be aware this event provides major funding for a much greater educational effort – the Mountain Wildlife Days’ Western North Carolina Wildlife Outreach. This outreach program provides wildlife and outdoor education opportunities throughout the year to schools and other organizations throughout Western North Carolina, last year touching some 1400 people.

Mountain Wildlife Days, always headquartered at the Sapphire Valley Resort Community Center, will celebrate its 12th anniversary on Friday and Saturday, July 17-18. There is a bird walk, waterfall hike and children’s animal program during the day on Friday, followed by a Bill Lea presentation focusing on bears in the evening. Saturday’s educational programs run from 10 AM to 3 PM, with birds of prey, wolves, reptiles and some animals not seen in these parts – all in attendance.

The admission charge of $5 Friday night and $8 all day Saturday (children free with parent) covers presentation costs. The very important outreach program funding comes from a silent auction of many donated items ranging from rounds (4) of golf to artwork to a weekend at the beach. Auction items will be set up for viewing at 6:30 Friday evening, with results announced Saturday afternoon.
