On Tuesday, April 18, 2017 The Cashiers Area Chamber in coordination with Jackson County Tourism and Development Authority and The Village Green of Cashiers hosted a Solar Eclipse Community Forum at the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library.

Paul Heckert, Astronomy & Physics Professor at Western Carolina University explained the basics of an eclipse and Nick Breedlove, Director of the Jackson County Tourism Development Authority spoke on county wide plans and logistics.

Matthew Cass, Physics Instructor and Science Department Chair at Southwestern Community College talked about college plans and eclipse viewing safety. Ann Self, Director at The Village Green talked about plans for the Cashiers Solar Festival (August 19-21.)

Todd Dillard, Director of Jackson County Emergency Management gave an update on emergency response plans and overall safety while Enrique Gomez, Associate Professor in the Chemistry & Physics Department at Western Carolina University talked about experiencing an eclipse in person.

All speakers were available to answer questions following presentations.

There are other solar eclipse informational opportunities scheduled closer to the event date on August 21, 2017. Enrique Gomez will speak again at The Village Green Nature Series Tuesday, July 25th at the Village Green in Cashiers.
