To elevate the cultural environment of Highlands and its environs by offering first rate theatrical productions; to seek out and develop the ample theatrical skills of the Highlands residents of all ages; and, to foster the camaraderie of participants in theatrical productions.
In July 1995 Sara Mayer, Carol Lucas, Jerri Talley, Jean Morris and April Hershey each put up $100 support their vision of a community players’ theater in Highlands. They chose three plays—Steel Magnolias, Dearly Departed, and A Thurber Carnival. Highlands Community Players was born.
For the next five years HCP continued to schedule a fall, winter and spring play with performances on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. The "Readers Theatre" has become a tradition during the Christmas season.
In the summer of 2008, the Highlands Community Players merged joined forces with folks in nearby Cashiers, NC to form Highlands Cashiers Players. The two communities' cooperation has greatly heightened the success of HCP.
HCP is going strong today as evidenced by the 20th Anniversary Gala.
